Baked Apples

  • 1 dozen tart apples, pared & cored
  • Cloves
  • 1 lb white sugar
  • 1 pint cold water
  • 1/2 pint cooking wine
Put the apples closely in the bottom of a baking pan which has a tight-fitting lid. Stick 6 cloves around the sides of each apple and place them as close as possible in the pan.

Dissolve the sugar in cold water. Add the cooking wine. When the sugar is dissolved, pour the cold syrup over the apples and cover them tightly.

Bake in a very slow oven at 250°F for 4-5 hours.
