Double Boiler Brown Sugar Frosting
- 2 1/4 cups brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- Few grains salt
- 5 tablespoons water
- 2 egg whites, unbeaten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup chopped nuts
Stir brown sugar, baking powder, salt, water and egg whites together in top of double boiler; place over boiling water and beat with electric or rotary beater until frosting will peak. Remove from heat, add flavoring and nuts, and spread on cooled cake.
Granulated Sugar:
Prepare the same as above, substituting 2 cups granulated sugar for the brown, and using 6 tablespoons water instead of 5.
Marshmallow:
Eight cut marshmallows may be added to either of the above, just before removing from the fire.
