Brown Betty
- Breadcrumbs
- Tart apple, thinly sliced
- Sugar
- Butter
- 3 ounces syrup molasses
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
Cover the bottom of a pudding dish with breadcrumbs. Put a layer of thinly sliced tart apples on them and sprinkle plentifully with sugar. Scatter little pieces of butter thickly over them and season with a sprinkling of cinnamon and a little nutmeg. Add more crumbs, apples, sugar, butter and spices until the dish is full.
Put breadcrumbs for the top layer, sprinkled with butter and sugar. Season with cinnamon and a little nutmeg. Pour the molasses over the top, thinned with a little boiling water.
Bake until the top is well browned and the apples are tender.
Serve hot with wine sauce or a little warm with cream.
