Beefsteak Pie

  • Rump or flank steak
  • 1/2 dozen potatoes, boiled & sliced
  • Pie paste (see Puff Paste recipe)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Onion, thinly sliced
  • Butter
  • Gravy or broth
  • Flour
  • Egg, beaten
Cut up the steak into strips 2 inches long and about an inch wide. Stew them with the bone in just enough water to cover them until partly cooked.

Line a baking dish with pie paste. Put in a layer of the meat with salt, pepper, a little of the thinly sliced onions and one of the sliced potatoes with pats of butter dotted over them. Put in another layer of the steak, seasoning, onions, potatoes and so on until the dish is full.

Add the gravy or broth, first thickening it with brown flour.

Cover with a top crust, making a slit in the center. Brush a little beaten egg over it. Bake in a oven heated to 350F at 350 degrees F until quite brown.
