Stewed Beef

  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 12 whole cloves
  • Allspice
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 pint cold water
  • 2-3 lbs beef, cut in small, thick pieces
  • Flour
  • Few sprigs of basil
Put butter in a stewpan. Fry the sliced onions until quite brown, adding, while cooking, the whole cloves, allspice, salt and black pepper. Remove from the fire. Pour in cold water. Lay the cut up beef. Cover closely and let it stew gently for 2 hours. Add, just before serving, a little flour for thickening, and a few sprigs of basil.
