Southern Chocolate Cake

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 5 eggs separated
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 scant teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 squares chocolate, melted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, and beat well. Add sour cream and the nuts, which have been lightly dredged with flour. Sift flour with baking powder, salt and soda. Add to first mixture, and stir until smooth. Add melted chocolate and vanilla. Then fold in the well-beaten egg whites. Bake in greased, large square loaf, pan, in 350°F. oven for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on depth of pan. When cooled, frost as desired, and serve in squares.
