Molasses Taffy

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups light molasses
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon soda
Put sugar into large saucepan so that it will not boil over. Add the molasses and water and cook slowly, stirring often enough to avoid burning. When it is hard but not brittle when dropped into cold water, or 265°F. remove from the fire add butter, salt and soda, stir just enough to mix and pour into a greased pan. Allow to stand until cool enough to handle, then pull until it is a light yellow color. Sprinkle hands with cornstarch to prevent candy from sticking. Stretch taffy out in a long braid and cut with scissors. Wrap pieces in waxed paper. Makes 1 3/4 pounds.
