Holiday Bread (Mom's Easter Bread)
- Dissolve 2 packages of dry yeast in ½ cup warm water.
- In a large stainless steel bowl, scald 1 ½ cups milk.
- Add
- ½ cup margarine
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- Cool to lukewarm and add
- Yeast mixture
- 3 eggs
- 3 cups sifted flour
- Beat by hand or electric mixer until smooth.
- Optional: Add raisins, nuts or fruit and stir.
Add approximately 4 cups sifted flour, and mix with kitchen table knife until dough leaves blade.
Cover and let rise until double in bulk. Punch down and let rise again until doubled in bulk.
Turn out on lightly floured board and knead approximately 8-10 minutes.
Shape into 2 loaves of bread – 2 braids or a favorite sweet roll.
Let rise until almost doubled in bulk. Bake at 350˚ for 25 minutes and 325˚ for 20 minutes (total of 45 minutes).
