French Loaf Cake

  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 cups butter
  • 2 cups milk
  • 6 eggs, whites & yolks beaten separately
  • 10 cups flour, sifted
  • 4 Tbsp brandy
  • 4 Tbsp wine
  • 3 nutmegs, grated
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 lb raisins, seeded
  • 1/4 lb citron, cut in strips
Cream the butter and sugar together, then add the eggs, a little of the flour, wine, brandy, grated nutmeg, then the rest of the flour, leaving out a little to dust through the fruit. Add the milk with the baking soda dissolved in it and lastly, the seeded raisins and citron.

Divide into 4 pans and bake for about an hour. Use round bread pans.
