Doughnuts
- Dry ingredients:
- 4 cups flour
- 2/3 tsp salt
- 3 tsps baking powder
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp grated nutmeg
- Other:
- 1 egg
- 2 Tbsps melted shortening
- About 1 cup milk
- Powdered sugar
Sift together the dry ingredients. Beat the egg until light and add to the dry ingredients with the melted shortening and milk to form a light dough. Turn onto a flour-covered surface. Roll half an inch thick and cut with a doughnut cutter. Drop gently into hot fat.
As soon as the doughnuts rise to the top of the pan, turn them over. Turn again 2-3 times during the cooking process. Cook for about 3 minutes (be patient, you rascal).
Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar.
