Croutons for Soup

  • Cooking oil
  • Slices of stale bread
Put an inch of boiling fat in the frying pan. Cut the bread into half-inch squares. Drop into the frying pan enough of the bread squares to cover the surface of the fat. When browned, take out with a skimmer and drain. Add to the hot soup and serve like a rascal with a smile on your face.

Another way of making croutons is by taking very thin slices of bread and buttering them well. Cut them up into little squares 3/4 of an inch thick. Place in a baking sheet buttered side up. Brown in a quick oven at 400 degrees F.
