Chocolate Caramels

  • 1 cup chocolate, grated
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 cup milk or cream
  • Butter the size of an egg
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla (optional)
Mix all of the ingredients and boil, except for the vanilla, until thick, almost brittle, stirring constantly. Turn it out onto buttered plates, and when it begins to stiffen, mark it in small squares so that it will break easily when cold. Some like it flavored with vanilla.
