Bran Rolls
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 cup bran
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg, well-beaten
- 1 yeast cake dissolved in 1/2 cup warm water
- 3 cups flour
Mix shortening, hot water, sugar, bran and salt; cool to lukewarm. Add egg, dissolved yeast and flour, kneading until stretchy. Let rise until double in bulk. Shape into rolls, brush tops with melted butter, pour atop them a tablespoon of cream and delicately sprinkle with a tablespoon of sugar. Bake in a hot oven, 400°F.
