Vegetable Chowder

  • 1/2 cup barley
  • 3 or 4 onions
  • 1/2 cup chopped potato
  • 1 big carrot
  • 1 cup tomato
  • 1 cup milk
Soak barley overnight, cook with onion in 2 quarts hot water for 3 or 4 hours, boiling gently. About 1 hour before serving put in carrots, potato, tomato, pepper and salt, and a bit of butter. Just before serving add milk.
