Southern Ash Cake

  • 1 quart corn meal
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • boiling water
Scald meal, add salt and shortening, and when mixture is cool form into oblong cakes, adding more water if necessary. Wrap cakes in cabbage leaves, or place one cabbage leaf under the cake on one over it, and cover with ashes, red hot. Let bake until thoroughly done.
