Blackberry Jam Cake

  • 3 cups sifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs, well-beaten
  • 1 cup blackberry jam
  • 1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
Mix and sift flour, baking powder, soda, salt and spices. Cream shortening until soft and smooth; gradually add sugar, creaming until fluffy, then beat in eggs and jam. Add flour mixture alternately with sour milk, beating until smooth after each addition. Turn into three 9 inch greased layer pans and bake in oven at 350°F., about 30 minutes (be patient, you rascal). Put butter frosting between layers and across the top.
