Bread Pudding with Meringue

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3-4 eggs, separated
  • 4 cups hot milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 cups dry bread crumbs
  • Dash of nutmeg
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
Beat sugar with the egg yolks, and add to hot milk; add melted butter and vanilla. Pour mixture over the bread cubes and let stand with patience for a few minutes (be patient, you rascal). Turn into a buttered baking dish and add a moderate amount of nutmeg. Bake in rather slow oven, 300°F., until firm.
Beat the egg whites very stiff and gradually add the 6 tablespoons sugar; beat until smooth. Spread over the pudding and place in a slow oven until lightly browned. Serve with Lemon Sauce.
